225+ Vintage Handwritten Recipes 3 Binders Cottagecore Huge Lot Ephemera Grandma For Sale

An unusually large, intact personal recipe collection consisting of three binders acquired together from the estate of a longtime Richmond, Virginia resident. The collection appears to have been compiled and used by the same home cook over many years rather than assembled from unrelated sources.

Collection Highlights

• Approximately 225 handwritten recipes in the first two binders alone

• Hundreds of additional recipes and pieces of culinary ephemera, including newspaper and magazine clippings, food-product recipes, printed recipes, photocopies, cooking references, and more

• The handwritten recipe count is approximate, as some pages contain multiple recipes, some entries are quite brief, and crossed-out material was not counted

• Many handwritten recipes retain the names of the people from whom they apparently came, giving the collection a wonderful personal character

• Dated printed material ranges from at least 1981 through 2004, although this should not be taken as the date range of the handwritten recipes themselves

• The collection was organized thematically rather than chronologically and appears to have evolved over many years

Binder 1 – Cloth-Covered Binder

• Older cloth-covered three-ring binder with homemade embossed category labels

• Approximately 95 handwritten recipes, plus numerous thematically filed newspaper and magazine recipes

• Categories include Appetizers, Quick Breads, Cornbread, Yeast Breads, Cakes, Cake Frosting, Casseroles, Desserts, Dessert Sauces, Frozen Desserts, Fish & Shellfish, Poultry, Sandwiches, Soups, Grits, Vegetables, and others

• Printed recipes were incorporated into the same organizational system as the handwritten material

Binder 2 – Large Organized Recipe Binder

• Substantial plastic/cardboard-backed binder containing approximately 128 handwritten recipes, plus extensive additional clipped and printed material

• Begins with several pages of handwritten kitchen reference information, including:

  • Measurements and weights

  • Ingredient equivalents

  • Can-size conversions

  • Cooking and household hints

  • A two-page section on preparing a “Good organized with handwritten category tabs

  • Contains additional handwritten material, Post-it notes, magazine and other clippings, photocopies, and culinary ephemera

  • Includes recipes printed on old continuous-feed computer paper, some mounted to cardstock

  • Printed recipes include Creole Gumbo, Phyllo Feta Cheese Appetizers, Meal-in-a-Bowl Chicken Soup, Cheese Nibblers, Herbs in Oil, Sweet Basil in Oil, and others

  • Also includes an interesting commercial cardboard seasoning is a genuine working kitchen collection and shows age and use

  • Some loose-leaf pages have torn or pulled away at the binder holes but remain with the collection

  • Some pages have stains or discoloration consistent with kitchen use

  • Some handwriting has faded or washed-looking areas but remains legible

  • Blank pages remain where the compiler placed them

  • The binders and contents have intentionally been left substantially as found, rather than reorganized or “cleaned up”
