Limited to just 900 examples worldwide, this example is No. 310/900 and is fitted with a highly desirable 18K/750 solid gold Broad nib.
The Raden Toki was created to commemorate Pilot's 90th Anniversary in 2008. Its subject, the Japanese crested ibis, or Toki, carries deep cultural significance in Japan. Pilot selected the Toki as a fitting symbol of renewal, preservation, and the company's continuing journey into the future. The graceful bird in flight gives the pen a sense of movement and quiet elegance that is particularly appropriate for an anniversary edition.
The pen's body is crafted from brass and decorated using traditional Japanese Togidashi-Taka Maki-e, Rankaku (eggshell), and Raden techniques. The resulting black lacquer surface provides a dramatic foundation for the shimmering gold and silver decoration and the extraordinary iridescence of the Raden.
Raden is among the most distinctive and labor-intensive elements of Japanese lacquer artistry. Extremely thin pieces of iridescent shell are carefully incorporated into the lacquer, producing subtle flashes of blue, green, silver, and other colors as the pen moves through the light. The effect is wonderfully understated from one angle, then surprisingly vivid from another, giving the dark surface a remarkable sense of depth and movement.
The Rankaku, or eggshell decoration, adds another layer of texture and visual interest, while the raised and polished Maki-e work gives portions of the design genuine dimensionality. Rather than simply applying an image to the surface, these traditional techniques build the decoration into the lacquer itself, creating a composition that rewards close examination.
The cap ring features a beautifully rendered Toki motif, depicting the graceful bird in flight. The decoration is elegant rather than excessive, allowing the black lacquer, gold and silver powder decoration, eggshell, and Raden to work together harmoniously. At the heart of this example is its 18K/750 solid gold Broad nib, featuring Pilot's special 90th Anniversary design. The rhodium-plated finish provides an attractive contrast to the gold and complements the black lacquer and iridescent decoration beautifully. The Broad nib has an impressive 1.00mm tipping measurement when measured with digital calipers, placing it firmly within the Broad range. In keeping with this pen's exceptional condition, the nib has never been inked or dip-tested and remains completely untouched.
The Raden Toki utilizes Pilot's dependable cartridge/converter filling system, offering the flexibility of bottled ink or Pilot cartridges. The filling system has been tested with water and performs exactly as intended.
For the collector, condition is particularly important with a fountain pen of this nature. This example remains in Mint, New Old Stock, Never Inked condition, with the lacquer, Maki-e decoration, Raden, trim, and nib exceptionally well preserved. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, or signs of use. Nearly two decades after its production, this pen remains remarkably close to the condition in which it left the Pilot factory.
Completing the offering is the original Pilot-Namiki presentation packaging, factory literature, collector documentation, and original unused Pilot ink bottle. The inclusion of the complete original presentation materials significantly enhances the desirability of this example for the serious collector.
