The real 1967 Greeves 250 Challenger was much more than another vintage British dirt bike.
Greeves motorcycles were manufactured in Essex, England, by a company founded by Bert Greeves. The motorcycle operation grew alongside the firm's Invacar business, and competition became enormously important to Greeves: the Greeves Riders Association notes that more than half of the company's total motorcycle production was built for competition in motocross, trials or road racing.
By the early 1960s, Greeves had become one of the prominent names in lightweight two-stroke off-road competition. The Challenger was introduced in the mid-1960s as the company's serious motocross—or, in British terminology of the period, scrambles—machine.
The 1967 250 Challenger was model 24MX5 and displaced 246cc. Unlike earlier Greeves competition motorcycles that relied heavily on Villiers powerplants, the Challenger represented Greeves' move toward its own purpose-developed competition engine, paired with an Albion gearbox.
Its air-cooled two-stroke single used a 66mm bore and 72mm stroke, with enormous cooling fins, an Alpha crankshaft assembly and competition-focused induction and exhaust systems. Motocross Action describes the Challenger engine as purpose-built for motocross and notes the use of a 30mm Amal carburetor and Steffa magneto.
For 1967, the 250 Challenger featured a four-speed transmission, approximately 217-pound weight, a 51.5-inch wheelbase and a lightweight fiberglass fuel tank. Period reporting also noted that the Challenger could be equipped with Greeves' distinctive leading-link front suspension or telescopic forks depending on configuration.
That unusual front suspension is one of the features that makes classic Greeves motorcycles instantly recognizable. The company's characteristic system used a leading-link arrangement rather than the conventional telescopic fork found on most motorcycles. Cycle World noted that it offered exceptionally low friction and considerably more travel than many contemporary forks.
By 1967, however, Greeves faced increasingly fierce competition from lighter European motocross machines produced by companies such as CZ and Husqvarna. The Challenger represented Greeves' effort to remain competitive during this rapidly evolving period in motocross development.
That makes the 1967 Challenger a fascinating snapshot of the era when British motocross engineering was battling the emerging continental European machines that would increasingly dominate the sport.
