Over time, the rubber rings become brittle and lose their elasticity, the ball becomes pitted which creates drag and prematurely wears the playfield surface. Additionally, a dirty playfield slows the ball movement and adds wear to the playfield, ball, etc. The lamps are an important part of game play, they light up special features and let you know which shots to shoot for.
