The photograph was originally taken during Highlander Folk School’s 25th-anniversary gathering in 1957 and was subsequently used by segregationist and anti-communist organizations in an effort to associate King and the Civil Rights Movement with communism. This version was distributed from Shreveport, Louisiana and offers additional copies for “$1 per 100” on the reverse.
The reverse identifies Abner W. Berry, Aubrey Williams and Highlander director Myles Horton and describes the gathering in strongly anti-communist language. The same photograph became widely circulated during the Civil Rights era and appeared on billboards throughout the South.
Unmailed. Shows light age and storage wear, toning and minor spotting as pictured. Overall a well-preserved example of a scarce and historically significant piece of Civil Rights-era political propaganda.
