The center of the main cell block on Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay, where rioting convicts are under siege, was shrouded in darkness last night while other parts of the building blazed with light. The light streaks in the foreground of the picture along the water are from moving patrols.The Battle of Alcatraz was a violent 48-hour prison revolt and botched escape attempt from May 2 to 4, 1946. Six convicts seized control of the cellhouse, killing two guards. Marines and law enforcement ended the siege, resulting in the deaths of three inmates.Photo is Dated: May 10, 1946.
