Vintage 1940 John T. McCutcheon Newspaper Cartoon Tribute Collection - 3 Pieces / 6 Cartoonists

Offered as one lot are three fascinating period newspaper cartoon pieces honoring legendary Chicago Tribune editorial cartoonist John T. McCutcheon (1870-1949) on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

The three pieces feature tribute artwork by six noted American newspaper cartoonists:

Piece 1

Clifford K. Berryman - Washington Star

Rollin Kirby - New York Post

Burt Thomas - Detroit News

Berryman\'s contribution is particularly interesting and includes his recognizable teddy bear character.

Piece 2

Karl Kae Knecht - Evansville Courier

An elaborate illustrated biographical tribute tracing McCutcheon\'s Indiana roots, Chicago newspaper career, travels, war-correspondent experiences and decades as a cartoonist.

Piece 3

Hal Coffman - Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Carl Somdal - Chicago Tribune

Includes Coffman\'s Western-themed “Top Hand” tribute and Somdal\'s depiction of McCutcheon as the “King of Cartoonists,” captioned “Seventy Years and Still Tops!”

These appear to be period newspaper-printed pieces that were clipped and preserved/mounted with black edging. Newspaper material is visible on the reverse.

The cartoons are associated with the larger 1940 celebration of McCutcheon\'s 70th birthday. The same group of prominent cartoonists contributed to the 1940 commemorative publication Saga of a Hoosier Boy: A Collection of Pictorial Tributes by the Contemporaries of John T. McCutcheon.

Please note: These are being offered as period printed newspaper material/ephemera, not original hand-drawn artwork, and we are not representing these particular pieces as pages removed from the Saga of a Hoosier Boy booklet.

Condition:

All three show expected age and handling wear, including toning, discoloration, creases/waviness and wear to the black borders/mounting. There is newspaper material on the reverse. The printed artwork and lettering remain quite clear. Please review all photographs closely for exact condition.

An unusual surviving group combining Chicago Tribune history, American editorial cartooning, John T. McCutcheon, Clifford Berryman and early 20th-century newspaper ephemera.

Sold together as the three-piece collection shown.
