DescriptionThis large color pictorial map was published in 1922 for the Peace Commemoration Tokyo Exposition, held in Ueno Park, Tokyo.What makes this piece particularly fascinating is that it is not simply an exposition guide.It was produced in connection with the visit of the Prince of Wales, Edward, together with Crown Prince Hirohito, then serving as Regent of Japan.At the top of the illustration, portraits of the two young royals appear side by side, accompanied by the British and Japanese flags.Edward would later become King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom, while Hirohito would later become Emperor Showa of Japan.In other words, this single piece preserves an extraordinary moment when two men who would later become monarchs of their respective countries were depicted together in Tokyo in 1922.The Peace Commemoration Tokyo Exposition was a major public exhibition held in the years following World War I, reflecting Japan’s modernization, industry, architecture, transportation, and international outlook during the Taisho era.The map is filled with remarkable detail.Exhibition halls, pavilions, fountains, roads, visitors, flags, landscaped grounds, and horse-drawn carriages are all illustrated throughout the scene.In the lower-right area, a royal carriage procession can also be seen, making this much more than a simple map. It functions almost like an illustrated historical panorama of the event.The left margin is dated:March 31, 1922This was also a particularly interesting period in Anglo-Japanese relations.
