1905 Philadelphia Rapid Transit Stock P.A.B Widener Streetcar Magnate Nice Vigne:
$59.00

Offered is an original 1905 stock certificate from the Philadelphia Rapid Transit (PRT) system, issued to transportation tycoon Peter Arrell Browne Widener, one of the most powerful figures in early American urban transit.

The Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company—formed in 1902 by Widener and his partner William Elkins—consolidated nearly all of Philadelphia’s street railway lines into a single system, laying the groundwork for modern mass transit in the city.

By 1905, the company was actively developing Philadelphia’s first subway and elevated rail lines, including the Market Street subway–elevated route, marking a pivotal transition from horse-drawn and cable cars to electrified rapid transit.

Widener himself was a dominant force in American finance and transportation, building a vast fortune through streetcar systems in multiple cities and later becoming one of the wealthiest Americans of his era.

Certificates from this period often feature intricate engraving by the American Bank Note Company and may bear signatures of key executives such as George Dunton Widener, who later perished in the Sinking of the RMS Titanic, adding an additional layer of historical interest.

CONDITION: This comes from my father’s collection of antique stocks and bonds. I am not a professional so please see photos and ask questions. Given its age, it shows age related toning, foxing, edge wear/folds/tears, cancellation holes and marks, a beautiful scenic electric streetcar, ornate borders, period typography, raised corporate seal and printed by American Bank Note Philadelphia.

This piece represents a tangible artifact from the birth of modern urban transit, during a time when private enterprise built the infrastructure that would eventually evolve into today’s public transportation systems.

Ideal for :

*Railroad & transit history collectors, especially early subway and streetcar systems

*Highly desirable for Titanic and Widener family collectors (connection to George Widener)

*Appeals to scripophily enthusiasts seeking early 20th-century financial documents

*Strong crossover interest in Philadelphia history and urban development

*Attractive display piece with ornate engraving and historical significance

Scarce association with one of America’s most influential transportation financiers

FINAL NOTE: I will combine shipping so please see other listings or follow as I continue to add.
