1883 Brooklyn Bridge Opening Invitation Tiffany & Co Original William Archer. Original engraved invitation issued for the historic opening ceremonies of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, now known as the Brooklyn Bridge, on May 24, 1883.Printed by Tiffany $ Co.on heavy cardstock and featuring a detailed engraved view of the Brooklyn Bridge, along with the seals of New York and Brooklyn.The invitation reads: “The Trustees of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge request the honor of the presence of Mr. William Archer at the Opening Ceremonies to take place on Thursday, May twenty-fourth at two o’clock P.M.”The recipient name “Mr. William Archer” is handwritten in period manuscript. The specific William Archer who received this invitation has not been definitively identified.The opening of the Brooklyn Bridge was one of the most significant American civic and engineering events of the 19th century. President Chester A. Arthur, New York Mayor Franklin Edson, Brooklyn Mayor Seth Low and other dignitaries participated in the ceremonies.
