Adams, Massachusetts sits in the Hoosac River valley in northern Berkshire County, wedged between Mount Greylock and the Hoosac Range. By 1875 it was a textile mill town of consequence — the Hoosic River powered dozens of cotton and woolen mills. The First National Bank, capitalized at $150,000, served the financial needs of that industrial community, with H. J. Bliss as president and H. H. Wellington as cashier.
The recipient, Williams Black & Co. at No. 1 William Street, occupied one of the most prestigious addresses in Lower Manhattan's financial district, two blocks from Wall Street in the heart of New York's banking corridor. The correspondence — an acknowledgment of enclosures received, printed on a form in the unusual detail of violet ink — reflects the routine inter-city banking correspondence that connected a Berkshire mill town's local bank to the New York financial markets on which its textile economy ultimately depended.
Adams was also the birthplace of Susan B. Anthony, and in 1875 still included what would become North Adams, not yet separated into its own town until 1878.
