Salmon & Salmon operated as private bankers on the south side of the public square in Clinton, the Henry County seat in western Missouri. Their building at 100 South Main Street still stands today, its original bank vault intact behind what is now a jewelry store.
Thiscard acknowledges receipt of commercial paper from J.F. Ricker of Quincy, noting simply that the paper had been accepted and would receive attention. The railroad had reached Clinton only four years earlier in 1870, when the town's population stood at just 840, and banking firms like Salmon & Salmon were essential to channeling credit into a community growing rapidly on the strength of rail commerce.
Ricker was one of the most prominent bankers in Quincy, Illinois. Born in Hanover, Germany, he came to Quincy with his parents in 1840 and acquired John Wood's banking interests in 1864. He later founded the Ricker National Bank in 1881, which eventually became the Quincy-Ricker National Bank & Trust Company. Salmon & Salmon continued operating for decades but ultimately closed amid a scandal involving questionable loans to relatives, with depositors recovering only a fraction of their deposits. People's National Bank succeeded the firm at the same location in 1907.
