Up for sale is this rare piece of history — a c1940s real photo postcard (RPPC) published by A. Mainzer, 230 Fifth Ave., New York, showing an aerial view of the three largest ships in the world docked together in New York Harbor as war refugees at the outbreak of WWII.
Ships pictured:
• Queen Elizabeth (at right) — 85,000 gross tons
• Queen Mary (center) — 81,000 gross tons
• Normandie (at left) — 83,000 gross tons
Caption reads: “The Three Biggest Ships in the World, War Refugees in New York”
This rare moment in maritime history was never repeated. The Normandie later caught fire and capsized at her New York pier in 1942 and never sailed again. The Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth went on to serve as Allied troopships during WWII.
Card is unused and unposted with a clean, blank back. Shows light age-appropriate wear. Stored in protective sleeve.
