Original early Canadian Signal Corps (CSC) military badge from the pre-WWI / First World War period.
This historic Signals pattern was authorized in 1908 and features:
• King's/Tudor Crown• Intertwined CSC monogram• Crossed signalling/semaphore flags• Maple foliage• Beaver• Motto scroll reading "VELOX VERSUTUS VIGILANS"
The motto translates approximately as "Swift, Skilled, Vigilant."
Period Canadian military regulations describe this exact family of cap/collar insignia for the Canadian Signal Corps. The design predates the later Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (RCCS) insignia; the later RCCS collar badge was derived from this pattern with RCCS replacing the original CSC monogram.
This example retains two rear attachment lugs and appears to be an other-ranks gilding-metal/gilt type rather than the enameled officer version.
Early Canadian Signals insignia is considerably less common than later WWII-period RCCS badges.
