THIS VINTAGE PIECE IS IN EXCELLENT WELL KEPT CONDITION THIS IS A VERY RARE PIECE TO FIND SIGNED BY DONICA & JUAN TAFOYA. This was created by Donicia Martinez Tafoya (1912–1979) and her son Juan B. Tafoya (1949–2006).
The Signature carved into the clay base reads: Donicia - Juan Tafoya - San - Ildefonso”
The Artists Background is Donicia Martinez Tafoya (1912–1979): A highly respected potter from the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. She specialized in classic Tewa black-on-black pottery, though she did not produce large quantities of work.Juan Tafoya (1949–2006): Donicia's son, who learned the craft from her and became an active potter around 1970. He became famous for his experimental work, masterfully combining traditional blackware with modern techniques like turquoise inlays, unique two-tone brown/black firings, and intricate sgraffito etching. During her later years, Donicia frequently collaborated with her children, most notably Juan, to co-create and sign joint pieces. A dual signature like the one pictured makes this piece an exceptional example of family-inherited Pueblo art traditions.
