Rest on the Flight - Rast auf der Flucht
Driven out the Bethlehem by King Herod and his murdering army, the members of the Holy family stop to rest during their flight into Egypt. To escape the heat of the midday sun, Mary sits in the shade of an olive tree with the Christ Child in her lap. In the background loom the towers of the troubled city they leave behind; for now, they enjoy a brief respite in a pastoral setting of blossoming flowers and grazing sheep, but from the middle distance, Joseph beckons them both with a wave of his hand; it is time to continue the journey, for they have not a moment to lose in their search for a safe haven.
\"When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt; and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, out of Egypt have I called my son.\" Matthew 2:14-15
