The AH-1G Cobra entered combat in Vietnam in 1967 and became the Army's first purpose-built attack helicopter. It was much faster and narrower than the UH-1 Huey gunships it replaced, making it highly effective in protecting air assault operations.
The 396th Aviation Company operated as part of the U.S. Army's aviation forces in South Vietnam, supporting combat operations throughout the conflict. Like other attack helicopter companies, it typically flew two-aircraft "Pink Team" or larger hunter-killer missions in conjunction with observation helicopters and troop-carrying Hueys.
