Victorian Edwardian Ladies Portrait Photographs Lot Eight British Cabinet Cards

🖋️ Description

A visually rich group of eight original Victorian and Edwardian portrait photographs of women, bringing together a varied selection of British studio photography from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The collection includes four larger cabinet-style portraits, three smaller decorative portrait cards and one square mounted photograph, giving the lot considerable variety in both format and presentation.

The women are shown in a range of period dress, including dark formal gowns, pale dresses, high collars, lace-trimmed bodices, bonnets and elaborate hats. Taken together, the photographs form an appealing small study of Victorian and Edwardian women’s fashion, studio portraiture and changing ideas of feminine presentation.

Several photographers and studios are represented through surviving printed backstamps and studio mounts.

One large portrait is by J. H. Price of Dursley and Malmesbury, whose decorative reverse advertises the photographer as an artist and photographer and gives details of studio attendance at Malmesbury.

Another large card bears the impressive backstamp of Ward’s, London, listing addresses at Brixton Road, Battersea Park Road and King’s Road, Chelsea.

A further portrait is associated with Edward Walton of Horsham, with the reverse prominently printed Edward Walton, 30 North Street, Horsham, together with the period advertising statement that additional copies could be obtained by quoting the original negative number.

Another card carries the stamp of C. Lloyd, Photographer, Knighton, while the remaining photographs include additional studio and decorative mounts of differing designs.

The smaller portrait cards are especially attractive. Three retain tiny oval photographic portraits approximately 2 × 2.4 cm, surrounded by elaborate printed or embossed decorative borders in muted blue, cream and pale green card. These miniature-format portraits create a strong contrast with the larger cabinet photographs and add variety to the group.

The square photograph, approximately 11 × 11 cm, presents another female sitter in a compact portrait format and retains a handwritten identification on the reverse reading Miss Charlotte Butler, adding a useful genealogical element to the collection.

Several other cards also carry handwritten names or later inscriptions, including references such as Nora Beeseley Girlie and Hilda Butler. These inscriptions are preserved as part of the history of the objects, although the identities have not been independently verified.

The group is particularly appealing because it does not simply repeat one type of sitter or studio format. Instead, it brings together different photographers, mount styles, fashion details and portrait conventions, making it an excellent compact collection of British women’s photographic history.

✨ Poetic Impression

Eight women remain where old card keeps their gaze
In lace and hats from long forgotten days
