A large devil roof tile we brought from Japanin very good unbroken condition.These were usually used on Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines or traditional residential roofs to ward off evil spirits.There is a maker\'s markon the back top. Its kanji states \"Nishi Matsuo Kawara\" (West Matsuo Tile) Matsuo is a family name.This was acquired directly by us through an antiques sale in the historic Kansai area of Japan.
Based on condition, workmanship and makers mark, this was most likely made in the early to mid 1900\'s.This was made by hand. Modern ones are cast and have a lighter almost silver glaze.There is a cast hook hole in the back. (See last photos) This is where the tile was attached to the roof structure (ridge) with thick copper wire. Japan has typhoons and earthquakes. That was necessary.This is also useful for attaching it to a shelf or wall.It\'s 18 1/2 inches wide x 12 inches high and 10 inches deep.It weighs 23pounds before packing.Because this is breakable ceramic it will be packed with extreme care. eg: It will be double boxed.Full insurance and tracking are included.
