Presidential Medal of Freedom service ribbon.
In 1963 President John F. Kennedy reestablished the old Medal of Freedom as the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A completely new medal was designed to honor U.S. citizens and foreigners (civilian or military) for meritorious contributions to security or national interests of the U.S., world peace, cultural, or other significant public or private endeavors. Awarded by the President, at his discretion. There are THREE versions of this medal. The lower ranking "Presidential Medal of Freedom" has two versions, male and female. The male version has the full size medal suspended from a neck drape. The female version has the full size medal mounted on a bow that pins on. In both versions, the eagle for the service ribbon, miniature medal and lapel pin are silver plated. The higher ranking "Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction" has a shoulder sash with a rosette and badge, and a breast badge. The eagle for the service ribbon, miniature medal and lapel pin is gold plated. Very difficult to obtain.
