This is an excellent example of an original U.S. Air Force ST-4 TropicalBailout Ration, a rarely encountered survival item from the early Cold War era.The ration remains factory sealed andunopened, retaining its original form and contents. One side shows alight dent from long-term storage, which is common given the age and nature ofthese tins. The can measures approximately 4”x 7” x 1½” and still includes its originalopening key affixed to the base.
The ST-4 was designed specifically for aircrewoperating in tropical and equatorialclimates, where humidity, heat, and the risk of extended survivalsituations required a compact yet nutritionally dense food supply. Each rationcontained a carefully planned assortment of items including concentrated food bars, beverage powder, sugar, chewing gum, vitamin tablets, and water purification tablets, alongwith detailed printed survivalinstructions. These were sealed in a moisture-resistant tin to ensurelong shelf life under extreme conditions.
The ST-4 rations were typically packed into aircraft survival kits, often placed in seat pack life rafts or bailout gear used by pilots and aircrewflying over jungle or oceanic regions. Few have survived intact, as most wereeither consumed during training, discarded after service, or opened by collectors in the decades since.
Today, an unopened ST-4 represents a scarce and highly desirable piece ofearly U.S. Air Force survival equipment. It makes an exceptional addition toany collection of military rations, survival gear, or Cold War aviationartifacts. All items sold are 100% guaranteed.
