- The Compound: Pieces created by the studio of Amilcare Santini are molded from an industrial composite material traditionally called oxolyte or Marbelite. This material is a high-density mixture of crushed alabaster, marble dust, and synthetic polymer resin.
- The Finish: The dark look is achieved via a surface treatment known as patinato. The molded compound is coated, hand-painted, or chemically patinated with metal powders to perfectly mimic the heavy oxidization and weathering of real, centuries-old patinated bronze.
How It Works
- The Mixture: Artists mix fine bronze metal powder with resin using a ratio of about 4 parts metal powder to 1 part resin.
- The Pouring: The creamy mixture is brushed or slush-cast inside a reusable rubber mold to form an outer metallic layer.
- The Backfilling: The inside is filled out with more resin, fiberglass, or rigid foam to save weight and add structural strength.
- The Finishing: Once cured, the piece is taken out of the mold, polished and buffed.
