Tarzan of the Apes HC Graphic Novel (1972) 1st Printing w/ Dust Jacket
Burne Hogarth’s Tarzan of the Apes (published in 1972) is a spectacular, oversized graphic novel adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs\' classic novel. Adapted by Robert M. Hodes, the book retells the first half of Burroughs’ original 1912 novel. It chronicles the tragedy of Lord and Lady Greystoke, the infant Tarzan being orphaned in the African jungle, his upbringing by a tribe of great apes, and his rise to becoming the \"King of the Apes\".
Burne Hogarth (1911–1996) is considered a towering figure in comic illustration. He began drawing the Tarzan Sunday newspaper strips in 1937. His work on the character was so influential that he defined the visual identity of Tarzan for a generation.
Instead of standard comic panels, the book features sprawling, full-color illustrative pages.
The original 1972 oversized edition is a highly sought-after collector\'s item, though the work has been kept in print by publishers like Dark Horse Comics.
