Marvel's 1979–1980 Shogun Warriors comic series follows three human pilots who operate giant mechs to save Earth from an ancient evil.Core Premise and Setup (Issues #1–5)The Origin: The peaceful Followers of the Light and the evil Agents of Darkness (led by Maur-Kon) battle across centuries. The Pilots: Three ordinary humans are chosen from around the world: Richard Carson: American stuntman piloting Raydeen. Genji Odashu: Japanese test pilot piloting Combatra. Ilongo Savage: Oceanographer from Madagascar piloting Dangard Ace. The Conflict: Awakened by volcanic activity, Maur-Kon unleashes giant monsters (Kaiju) to conquer the planet, forcing the newly recruited trio to master their massive machines. Escalation and Universe Crossovers (Issues #6–13) Battling the Dark: The pilots fight off Maur-Kon's supernatural beasts and destructive agents across various global locations. Expanding Threats: The mid-run features standalone battles against rampaging monsters, elemental threats, and subterranean forces tied to Maur-Kon's ancient crusade. Integration with the Marvel Universe (Issues #14–18) Doctor Demonicus: The series ties into the wider Marvel Universe by crossing paths with Godzilla villain Doctor Demonicus, fighting his mutated monster spawn. The Fantastic Four: The heroes team up with the Fantastic Four in the final stretch to handle cosmic and high-tech menaces. Conclusion (Issues #19–20)The Final Battle: The overarching war with Maur-Kon reaches its head. Removal of the Mechs: The series ends abruptly when a mysterious alien race arrives and takes the Shogun Warriors away, decommissioning the robots and concluding the title. Doug Moench later wrote a brief epilogue in Fantastic Four to officially close out the pilots' stories.
