In 1832 the State Government of South Carolina debated leaving the Federal Union in response to tariffs enacted by the US Congress. Many in the State of Georgia shared these views but declined to support such an ordnance. It was expected President Andrew Jackson, a Tennessean would permit Nullification to take place, but Jackson, a staunch believer in the Federal Union announced he would send troops to enforce Federal laws in South Carolina. Comes w service info- Captain Merchant served for 45 years in the United States Army and during the Nullification Crsis was also stationed at Fort Moultrie, SC. He remained loyal to the Federal Union and retired after the Civil War.
