While individual, small souvenir lacquer eggs are common, a matching, large cabinet sized narrative set from a single artist workshop is an exceptionally rare find for serious collectors of Russian folk art, Palekh miniatures, and fine lacquerware.
The artistry and origin
Each piece is painted in the elite, strict Palekh tradition – featuring an impossibly glossy pitch-black lacquer background, dramatically elongated figures, vibrant, egg – tempura colors, and breathtakingly intricate details.
The bottoms of the eggs are meticulously, inscribed in Cyrillic, noting the production year 1998, the artist Kuznetsova, the poem title, and Sergiev Posad– Russia’s historic carving capital, signifying an elite late – 90s export collaboration, utilizing master Palekh artisans
The narrative triptych breakdown (three eggs total)
Unlike most commercial eggs that only feature repetitive images of a flying wizard, this master series includes highly complex, rare literary scenes:
1. Egg one approximately 6 inch tall: The duel With Rogday
The scene: a highly kinetic, dramatic battle scene showing the brave knight Rusion leaping from a horse in mid combat to hurl his jealous rival, the beardless knight Rogday, into the river. Features stunningly detailed horses and armor line work.
2. Egg two approximately 6 inches tall: The Sorcerer Chernomor
The scene: the classic, highly sought after focal image of the villainess dwarf wizard Chernomor soaring through the night sky, magical, flowing white beard swirling on magnificent wind currents.
3. Egg three approximately 5 inches tall: the prophecy of Finn the wizard
The scene: a breathtaking beautiful and rare winter landscape scene. It depicts a man holding a fish in the snow, capturing the deep backstory of Finn’s youth as a northern fisherman before becoming Rusian’s mystical mentor. The snow textures and silver – white accents gleam beautifully against the black lacquer.
