Beyond his mayoral duties, Morris holds a legendary status in U.S. Postal History. In 1845, while serving as the Postmaster of New York City, Morris issued the "New York Postmaster's Provisional"—a 5-cent adhesive stamp. Because the federal government had not yet begun issuing national postage stamps, Morris took the progressive initiative to create his own local stamps for the prepayment of mail.
