RARE ORIGINAL WWI AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN SCHOOL MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPH MONTAGESzilágysomlyó Roman Catholic Episcopal Gymnasium – 1916–1917Named Soldiers & School Figures – Original Period Photographs
A remarkable and apparently very scarce First World War Austro-Hungarian memorial photographic assemblage, produced at Szilágysomlyó, Hungary — today Șimleu Silvaniei, Romania — and associated with the town's historic Roman Catholic Episcopal Gymnasium during the 1916–1917 school year.
The large original mounted composition contains approximately eleven individually mounted photographic portraits, each identified in manuscript beneath the photograph, arranged around two larger central portraits.
The elaborate Hungarian banner inscription across the top identifies the Szilágysomlyó Roman Catholic Episcopal Gymnasium and the 1916–1917 school year, placing the object squarely in the First World War period.
Several of the young men are shown in Austro-Hungarian military uniform.
This is not a modern reproduction or subsequently assembled collection of photographs. It appears to be an original contemporary commemorative display associated with the school and its wartime community.
SZILÁGYSOMLYÓ AND THE GYMNASIUM
Szilágysomlyó was then part of the Kingdom of Hungary within Austria-Hungary. Following the First World War and the Treaty of Trianon, the town became part of Romania and is today known as Șimleu Silvaniei.
The Roman Catholic gymnasium was an important local educational institution administered by the Minorite order. Contemporary scholarly research specifically cites the school's surviving annual reports for 1914–15 and 1915–16, edited by Mihalcsik Bonó, one of the central figures associated with the institution during precisely the period represented by this memorial.
The memorial therefore survives from a particularly significant moment: the final years of historic Hungarian Szilágysomlyó immediately before the collapse of Austria-Hungary and the subsequent transfer of Transylvania to Romania.
FRÜHAUF GYULA — A DOCUMENTED SOLDIER IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
Particularly noteworthy is the portrait identified as Frühauf Gyula.
Surviving records of the Szilágysomlyó school document Frühauf's education there over a number of years. He appears as a first-form pupil in 1906–1907, subsequently in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh forms, and finally as a graduating student in 1913–1914.
His subsequent fate is documented in remarkable detail in the contemporary newspaper Szilágy-Somlyó of February 17, 1916, under the heading “Hősi halál” — “Heroic Death.”
After completing the eighth class at the Szilágysomlyó Roman Catholic Gymnasium, Frühauf entered the prestigious Ludovika Military Academy and was commissioned as an officer.
He served as a Royal Hungarian Honvéd lieutenant in the 12th Honvéd Infantry Regiment.
On February 1, 1916, while leading a small patrol on the Volhynian front, Frühauf was struck by a Russian bullet. His comrades carried him back alive, but he died of his wounds.
He was just 21 years old.
The contemporary account records that he remained conscious at the end and died with his mother's name on his lips. He was buried beside the church at Silno/Sylne in Volhynia.
His portrait survives here among his fellow members of the Szilágysomlyó school community.
MIKE GYULA — ANOTHER DOCUMENTED FORMER PUPIL
Another portrait appears to be identified as Mike Gyula.
A contemporary June 1915 newspaper report records a 19-year-old Mike Gyula of Szilágysomlyó, who had successfully completed his studies at the town's gymnasium and entered the Austro-Hungarian 5th Infantry Regiment as a volunteer.
Already ill when he entered service, he was admitted to hospital with serious heart disease and died there in June 1915.
The report explicitly identifies him as having graduated from the Szilágysomlyó főgimnázium, providing another direct link between an individually named portrait in this assemblage, the school and the wartime generation it commemorates.
MIHALCSIK BONÓ AND THE SCHOOL'S WARTIME HISTORY
The prominent older gentleman in one of the two large central portraits appears to be identified as Mihalcsik Bonó.
This is particularly significant because Mihalcsik Bonó is independently documented as the editor of the school's annual reports during the First World War.
Modern scholarship cites both:
A Minorita rend szilágysomlyói róm. kath. püspöki főgimnáziumának értesítője az 1914–1915. tanévről, edited by Mihalcsik Bonó;
and the corresponding 1915–1916 annual report, likewise associated with him.
His presence in the central position helps demonstrate that the composition represents the wartime community of the gymnasium, rather than being merely an unrelated collection of military portraits.
THE PHOTOGRAPHS
Eleven individual portraits are mounted onto the original large backing.
The subjects include young men in Austro-Hungarian military uniform, civilians, and senior school figures. Each portrait has a handwritten identification beneath it.
Several names remain difficult to decipher with certainty and are therefore not represented here as definitive identifications. Buyers interested in a particular individual are welcome to contact the seller for a close-up photo.
The arrangement, calligraphic inscriptions, individual photographic prints and surviving original presentation make this a particularly evocative piece of First World War Hungarian and Transylvanian social history.

At the bottom of the original backing/frame is the surviving maker/framer's plaque:

This provides additional physical evidence that the object was actually assembled or framed in Szilágysomlyó itself, rather than being a later retrospective compilation.
HISTORICAL INTEREST
This unusual object has interest across several collecting fields:
World War I / WWI militaria; Austro-Hungarian military history; Royal Hungarian Honvéd; Hungarian photography; Transylvanian history; Romanian/Hungarian regional history; military portraiture; school history; vernacular photography; memorial photography; and the history of Austria-Hungary.
Unlike an unidentified WWI soldier portrait, this assemblage preserves an entire small community. At least two of the young men can be connected through contemporary documentary evidence directly to the school and their wartime histories, while one of the central figures is independently documented in the published history of the institution.
It is an unusually poignant survivor from a community whose political and cultural world was transformed almost immediately after these photographs were assembled.
CONDITION
Original unrestored condition, with substantial age and wear.
The large backing/frame shows considerable surface wear, staining, discoloration, abrasions, losses and deterioration consistent with its age and long-term storage.
The mounted photographic composition itself shows age toning, oxidation, fading, staining and surface wear. Individual photographic mounts show age and occasional edge wear.
The Papp Imre, Szilágysomlyó label survives at the bottom.
No attempt has been made to clean, restore, remove, remount or otherwise alter the individual photographs.

Given its age and historical nature, we strongly recommend that any future conservation or cleaning be undertaken only by a professional paper/photograph conservator.
