This launch marked the fourth test flight in thePershing II engineering and development program and the third test conductedfrom Cape Canaveral.
The Pershing II was a mobile, intermediate-range ballisticmissile used by the U.S. Army and deployed at American bases in West Germanystarting in 1983. It was designed to target locations in the western SovietUnion. Each Pershing II carried one thermonuclear warhead with a variableexplosive power equal to 5 to 50 kilotons of TNT. Under the 1987Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the United States and theSoviet Union, all Pershing II missiles and their support equipment were removedfrom service and made inoperable.
