Locals say the mountain profile looks just like a woman lying on her back — peacefully asleep. When turquoise was discovered there, the mine took on the same name, and so did the gemstone. Unlike other types of turquoise that feature heavy matrix or veining, Sleeping Beauty turquoise is celebrated for its solid robin’s egg blue color and clean, smooth appearance. It doesn't require stabilization or dyes — its natural clarity and richness speak for themselves. The Sleeping Beauty mine officially closed in 2012, which means no new turquoise is being produced from this location.
