***Smoke Free Household***Original vintage black-and-white photograph of Republic P-47D-2-RE Thunderbolt serial number 42-8099 in flight. Measures 9 3/4” x 7 3/4”. The serial is clearly visible on the vertical stabilizer, along with the U.S. star insignia.This aircraft served with the 348th Fighter Group, 341st Fighter Squadron (“Black Jack”), 5th Air Force in the Southwest Pacific. It was lost in combat on 27 December 1943 near Arawe, New Britain, while engaged with Japanese fighters. The pilot, 1st Lt. Wilburn S. Henderson, bailed out and was never recovered (MIA/KIA).The print itself is in good condition with solid contrast and clear detail. It is currently mounted on old cardboard that is deteriorating and crumbling at the edges. The photo has not been removed from the backing.
