Yosemite Valley, Central California, one of the most remarkable natural scenes on the continent. The Yosemite chasm is about eight miles long, half a mile to a mile wide, and nearly a mile deep. Its walls rise almost perpendicularly from 3000 to 4000 feet above the bottom of the valley. It is a profound abyss, cut out of the solid granite of the Sierra Nevada. The Valley is a stupendous rent in the mountains, a gigantic fissure, as if some vast convulsion had split asunder the solid crust of the earth. From Glacier Point, where this view is taken, the valley floor lies more than 3,000 feet below. The sense of awe inspired by the depth and sublimity of the scene before you is indescribable. You look downward nearly a mile, and the grandeur and immensity of the abyss cannot be realized except when seen in person. Here nature has wrought on a scale of immensity which almost paralyzes the imagination. Nearly a mile sheer descent confronts the spectator and, standing on the very brink, the valley seems like a fearful abyss ready to engulf the gazer.
Condition:
This stereoview card shows moderate wear consistent with age. The corners are slightly rounded with minor creases, and there is some fading of the printed text on the reverse. The photographic images remain clear with good tonal range, though with expected sepia toning typical of early 20th-century prints. Structurally intact and well-preserved for its age.
