Native American Kachina Doll MASTOP Signed Ron Largo - 6.5 inches tall
Hand painted black face with white detail
MASTOP
Death Fly Kachina
Mastop is present only on Third Mesa, arriving on the next to the last day of the Soyal Ceremony. This kachina always comes as a pair although they have not visited Old Oraibi for many decades. They represented a prayer for the fertility of the Hopi women from the dead Hopi ancestors. They arrive out of the northwest bounding about and beating the dogs with the short black- and white-striped sticks that they normally carry. They cavort about the village alternating this frenetic activity with short dashes into the crowds to grasp any age of
female by the shoulders from behind. By giving a series of short hops they imitate copulation and then return to their antics. This action is a serious fertility rite. Although a number of these dolls are made each year they are often confused with Matya, the Hand Kachina, and the wrong gear placed on the doll.
Possibly because they have not been seen for so many years few of these dolls have all of the proper accoutrements.
