MAGIC THE GATHERING, or MTG, released in 1993 by Wizards of The Coast, was the first-of-its-kind Customizable Card Game / Table Top Game that also was a collectable trading card game. In its now 31 years, the game is estimated to have well over 50 million active players worldwide, generating over a $1B annually in sales.
Hasbro Toys is the new owner of MTG, having bought and assimilated Wizards of The Coast some years ago, and now they're looking to expand the IP, due in part to the company's recent shift of attention from toys to games. So, the announcement earlier this year that Hasbro has teamed up with LEGENDARY ENTERTAINMENT, the production studio that is responsible for making Godzilla and King Kong more like household names again, to create a shared MTG Universe across film, TV and gaming.
Very likely, as with Godzilla and King Kong, comics will be a part of the mix, too -- especially as MTG has maintained a comics presence for years, from a myriad of publishers old, new and current. That presence began exactly 25 years ago, when Wizards teamed up with Acclaim Entertainment -- a video game development company that had also bought Valiant Comics in 1994 in order to use Valiant's characters in new games and the comic series as marketing material. Acclaim, through a newly minted imprint they called Armada, would tackle MTG for Wizards, and in 1995, the first issue was released.
MAGIC THE GATHERING: THE SHADOW MAGE #1, the first issue of a four-issue limited series, hit comic book shops in July of 1995, sealed tightly into a thin transparent poly-bag and complete with a special Promo Playing Card -- "FIREBALL" -- that was not elsewhere available. MTG The Shadow Mage #1 is the FIRST APPEARANCE of the MTG IP in the medium of comics, yet it would certainly only be the first of a great many appearances to come.
Increasingly hard-to-find, the time is Now to give your collection exactly what it deserves:
