On March 4, 1909, a major historical blizzard swept across the Mid-Atlantic region, severely impacting Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and completely paralyzing local travel and infrastructure.

This specific weather event is widely known in American history as the \"Inaugural Blizzard of 1909\" because it struck on the exact day President William Howard Taft was sworn into office in nearby Washington, D.C.

Isolation from the Outside World: By Friday morning (March 5, 1909), the day following the peak of the storm, all north and south communication and travel lines out of Lebanon were completely shut down by massive snowdrifts.

Halted Mail and Services: Local rural mail carriers were entirely stranded; for instance, the carrier heading to nearby Richland, PA, was forced to stay overnight en route because roads were completely impassable.

Regional Disruption: Across Pennsylvania and down into the nation\'s capital, the storm dumped roughly 10 inches of heavy snow accompanied by high-velocity gale winds. It snapped miles of telegraph poles and left trains stormbound for hours across eastern Pennsylvania railroads.
