This meticulously handcrafted Meerschaum Pipe Prop & Box replica was made in Dresden, German by LaserBrosDD and lovingly finished to perfection by the seller. It’s fashioned from porcelain with a touch of genuine meerschaum vs the many resin versions on the market. This replica is an accurate representation of the original prop seen on the big screen that played a significant role in the movie plot from the hit movie National Treasure. From the intricate design to the beautiful finish, every detail has been carefully replicated.
MOVIE HISTORY:
The Meerschaum Pipe was found aboard a Colonial sailing ship frozen in the Arctic ice, an ornate Meerschaum pipe, depicting the crusading Knights Templar on the body and an inscribed scroll on the stem, provided the next clue to the location of the treasure of the Temple of Solomon: "The legend writ the stain affected the key in Silence undetected Fifty-five in iron pen Mr Matlack can't offend" ...which led both Ben Gates and rival Ian Howe to the National Archives.
THE BOX: 12 3/4” L x 5 3/4” W x 4” H is a movie prop in its own right – perfect for collectors, movie fans, or as a unique gift. The handmade wooden box has a beveled edges around the top, a hand made movie prop realistic silver colored insert with a beautiful border. The panel is 11.5” long x 4.25” and inset into the top of the wood box. There are three panels in the panel insert. Pilgrims in the first panel, an eagle in the middle panel, and Indians in the last panel. The front of the box has a hinged clasp with second hook slide latch. The back of the box has two hinges with 6 screws in each. The box has been sanded smooth and coated with a wax infused rich cherry color and buffed to a shine for a more authentic ‘antique’ look and feel. The box comes lined with blue satin over form-fitting foam and is glued to the foam for a more fitted and quality feel. The box is a great place to store or display the pipe. Condition: The top wooden front has what looks like a 7.5” hairline split in the wood that was there when I received it. It is tight, does not appear on the inside (I looked), and does not appear to cause any structural issues. There are also visible seams where the box was fitted together but they all seem tight.
THE PIPE: all in all is 10 3/4” long. The carved section is 4” long x 3” high x 1 5/8” on the wide end and 3/4” on the narrow end. Like the movie Prop, this piece is NOT an actual pipe. I wish it was a real pipe, although I wouldn't use it as such. The pipe itself is quite heavy and the relief is quite well done on the pipe and stem roll. When I received pipe, the designer had tried to “age” the pipe using paint. It sounded good in theory, but the execution didn’t appeal to me and didn't represent the movie version to my satisfaction. After doing some research on real Meerschaum pipes, I realized Meerschaum retains its white color even after 100’s of years unless it’s used for smoking. So I refinished the pipe back to the original white/off white color it started as. I think you’ll agree it looks great, but should you choose you can "age" it to your satisfaction. Condition: hand painted. There are few bubble hole if you look really really closely, but they are few and can be filled with white shoe polish if they pose an issue. The thin small tower on the top of the pipe near the horses head is especially delicate. The good news is it should glue back together easily if dislodged and white shoe polish works well for touchups on the pipe.
THE STEM: has 3 parts. The inscribed scroll section: The roller potion of the pipe is just shy of 2” wide and actually produces a message like the movie prop and can easily be shown to friends and family. “The legend writ the stain affected the key in Silence undetected Fifty-five in iron pen Mr Matlock cant offend ….” I’ll leave it up to you if you want to do this, or leave white. Please know, once it is rolled in ink it will probably permanently stain the roller potion so be sure to use the same color used in movie, blood red. Condition: I did notice some manufacturing bubble holes mainly on roller portion, they are only visible upon really close inspection. Most people don't care or look that close, but please check the photos as I am trying to be thorough and I want the new owner to be totally satisfied with their purchase. Also where the roller stem attaches to pipe is slight looser than I would like, but I decided not to fool with it and let a new owner decide if it's an issue they want to adjust or leave alone.
The wooden section of the pipe stem is 2 5/8” long with the same rich cherry color used on the box. It too has been sanded smooth and coated with a wax infused color and buffed to a shine for a more authentic ‘antique’ look and feel.
The pipe stem is approximate 2” long and made of Black Resin
This item is NOT A TOY and should be handled with care. It should not be handled by young children without adult supervision. I noticed several sections of the pipe stem are glued together and may separate if handled incorrectly. The thin small tower on the top of the pipe is especially delicate. The good news is any separationsshould glue back together easily if dislodged. White liquid shoe polish works well for touchups on the pipe; while burgundy paste shoe polish works well for touchups to the box. Be sure to look at the pictures provided they are very helpful.
