Wealthy entrepreneur, philanthropist, and abolitionist of 19th century Baltimore (1795-1873), now most noted for his philanthropic creation of the institutions that bear his name, namely the Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Partly-printed signed document, one page, 6.125 x 10.125, February 22, 1859. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company stock certificate for 50 shares, signed at the bottom by Hopkins as president.
Normal age related imperfections such as browning. 5 cancellation holes (not through Hopkins signature), clipped lower left corner and a thin 3 cm vertical tear going through the "and" in "Baltimore and Ohio Rail-Road Company."
