Ingrid Bergman confronts co-star Irina Demick in a tense interior scene from 20th Century-Fox’s 1964 CinemaScope drama “The Visit.” Shot on set during production, the sharply focused black-and-white still captures Bergman’s opulent gown and Demick’s simpler dress as they face each other beside a lace-draped window, studio wall and shadowed chair providing stark contrast. National Screen Service reference number 64/274 is printed at lower right, confirming this as an original release publicity photograph for the film.
Based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s celebrated 1956 play, “The Visit” starred Bergman and Anthony Quinn and was directed by Bernhard Wicki in Rome’s Cinecittà Studios and on location in Caprarola, Italy. Bergman, already a three-time Academy Award winner, used this role to mark her return to major studio pictures after years of European work, while French actress Demick was fresh off “The Longest Day.” Original studio stills of Bergman remain highly collectible and continue to rise in value, so grab this vintage gem before another classic-film devotee does.
