In her childhood and then as a young woman, she reveled in the extreme. She had no concern what harm her actions may inflict; for her, she didn't mind dirty hands, and the trouble they caused was easily dismissed, if it even found her. The spoiled child of aristocratic Europeans, Anastasia Cisarovna had her way from an early age. Wealth was her right, and she chose to wield it as a weapon, much like she chose to wield herself. In Europe's high circles, she was a rebel.
In some respects, her wealth was the cause of her rebellion, and it took many forms. First, student radicalism, then involvement with fringe extremism. Later, she'd found her way to international terrorist groups, where she gained skills as a spy and saboteur. She earned a reputation, if not a name. She had many admirers.
Was it some deep hated of self or social status that fueled her determination? Was she disgusted by the ease and the opulence of the world she had been born to? Her familiar wealth was a necessary parasite she could never separate from, but she renounced the lifestyle and luxury others would die to possess. She forged a path that might have been paved with diamonds; instead, she traveled on roads of chaos, highways strewn with deceit and obsession and ... something else? Yes, Anastasia was full of contradictions: cynical yet romantic, calculating but naive, blunt yet prone to beating around the bush. If she was looking for something along that road, she didn't know. She would continue on, until the road met its end. And at the of it, what was there was Cobra.
Cobra offered her a vision of the extreme like none before dared to even dream. It would become her dream, and Anastasia changed her name to become Anastasia De Cobray in a nod of loyalty to the organization and its Commander. The latter never noticed, but Cobra itself did. She took the moniker "The Baroness", as she believed it was a title more than fitting. She gained the rank of Intelligence Officer and became a qualified expert in the use of the M-16, AK-47, RPG7, and Uzi. She grew proficient as an operator of helicopters and the Cobra H.I.S.S. tank, and later, falling in love with the Cobra Rattler aircraft, completed training as a fixed-wing aircraft pilot. All these improvements to herself she made with a vengeance, and her prior skills in cryptography, psychological warfare and biochemistry, as well as her uncanny adeptness at the art of disguise, found ample opportunities to be honed.
All of this, of course, is prologue to a story now long passed. This was what hadalready happened, before Cobra's global reach would first put it into conflict with the international counter-terrorism unit known as G.I. JOE. To The Baroness, the challenge posed by G.I. JOE was an opportunity for Cobra to emphatically declare its superiority as the preeminent terrorist organization on the planet. In this, she would ensure her rightful and deserved place by joining the first major offensive against the enemy.
It is in this way that The Baroness made her unforgettable First Appearance in Marvel Comics' G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 (June 1982). All that would come next is history.
