Across the lower left runs a raised edge with a chamfered top and an iron bracket or railing at the far left. Read
alone, that is a platform edge.
• But the right-hand half changes the reading. Rails sit on sleepers at ground level, the crowd is standing directly
on and between them, and a stack of loose spare sleepers or timbers lies in the bottom right corner on unmade
ground.
• Nobody stands on the track at a working station, and a working station does not keep spare sleepers piled on the
ballast. The likeliest reading is a line newly laid or still under construction, photographed on a public occasion— an opening, a ceremonial first working, or a works open day. A light railway, contractor’s line or waterworks
tramway would all fit.
• Supporting that: several of the boys wear white flower buttonholes, and the girls are in white dresses and best hats.
That is a formal, organised event, not a casual day out.
• The crowd runs to well over a hundred, banked up a slope behind and among trees, with a large dark mass at the far
right that could be a wagon, a locomotive or a structure.
• The ledger’s “excursion or outing party” may still be right — a Sunday-school outing gathering at a temporary halt
would look much like this. I am flagging the construction evidence, not overturning the entry.
