RUSTIC PRIMITIVE FARM CHARMAMERICAN COOKING WARECROCK OR SHOULDER BOWLYELLOW WARE CLAY WITH BEIGEINTERIOR GLAZE3\" Tall, 9.5\" WideThis is a rare turn of the century shoulder or crock bowl, a primitive piece with interior crazing on the interior beige glaze which is common in these older pieces. There is age appropriate wear on the outer clay surface. Also a couple of hairline cracks on the side and one larger one in the center of the bowl. These are surface hairlines, they do not extend through the surface. This is a very old bowl, made somewhere around the late 1800s or early 1900s designed for daily use. In great condition considering this bowl\'s age and purpose.
HISTORY:Research shows that this is a turn of the century shoulder or crock bowl most likely manufacturedin the late 19th or early 20th century in Ohio. Historically these were utilitarian wares sold widelyacross the country, often through hardware catalogs, general stores or traveling salesmen. Stamped Fire Proof on the bottom which indicates that the clay body was made to conduct heatslowly without cracking, so these pots/bowls were safe to use in wood-fired ovens or nestled intoa hot bowl of coals, not direct flame. The modled ribs (slats or fluting) provided texture so a baker\'s hands wouldn\'t slip when thebowl was covered in wet dough, lard or butter. The ridges also made the body more stable and lesslikely to warp or crack during use in the intense heat of a wood-fired or coal-fired oven or hearth. This is a very old piece that was used extensively, not recommended for cooking use but decorativeusage. Great for a display piece or fruit bowl, adding some primitive country farm charm to your kitchen.
