A collection of 36 sea shells from Henley Beach on the Gulf of St Vincent in South Australia plus three treasures from Far North Queensland.
Included are 24 scallop shells in varying shades of purple, pink and coral. The shells have a symmetrical fan-like shape and intricate surface details with patterns of bands, spots or marbled designs which serve as camouflage or as a display to deter predators. Growth rings, visible as concentric lines on the shell’s surface, provide a record of the scallop’s age, like the rings of a tree. The shells range in diameter from .75” to 2.25”.
Also included are 12 translucent shells with a beautiful pearl finish in shades of apricot, ivory, lemon and peach. The shells range in diameter from 1.25” to 2.5”. The shells are similar to potato chips in shape, weight and thinness. As shown in the first photo, the shells are so thin that blue sky is visible through them. The scientific name is Anomiids. In the US they are known as jingle shells.
The “potato chips” shells are very sturdy, despite their delicate appearance. I have used them to highlight frames and mirrors, wind chimes and jewelry. I have drilled holes in them and they did not crack or split.
The three items in the middle are from beaches in far North Queensland near Port Douglas and the Great Barrier Reef.
On the left is a long-tailed spindle shell measuring 3.25” by 1.25.” The internal spiral is visible where the curved back would be.
The center shell is a Strombus Listeri Conch shell in excellent condition. It is 5” by 2”.
A coral branch measuring 3” by 1” is on the right. It has a few blush tinted areas on its surface.
Collecting sea shells along the beaches of South Australia and Queensland was my favorite activity when I lived there. The graphic shapes, symmetry and designs appealed to my artist’s imagination and I collected many of them.
Now I am downsizing my collectibles, including sea glass and shells.
