Private John W Hutchinson of Edinburgh New York enlisted in 1862.with the newly formed115th NY Volunteer. They were sent to defendHarpers Ferry Virginia just before the post was captured by Stonewall Jacksonand Private Hutchinson was taken prisoner and his comrades were sent to the Parole Camp at Chicago. Released from parole he was sent to join the Army besieging South Carolina serving there until his death from fever at Hilton Head , SC. An Original Civil War Letter from Hutchinson, January 9, 1863 "115th Co C 115 Regt NYSV " Yorktown, Virginia to his young wife "Catey" (Catherine Olive Fonda from Sartoga County ). ".Dear Wife" - he is devastated by the death of their mutual friend and grieves with her on this sorrowful New Year. He says is homesick and misses her and the little ones. My lovely wife and sweet children, - as you say Catey, you wish this war would stop, -as do countless wives, parents, children. He wishes to god the End of he War was tomorrow and all the loved ones rejoicing at peace.. .He is grateful father and Mother have taken her the children in to support them. He had no idea how the Draft would turn out but if he had, he would never have left. her side. He shares herbereavementwhich is great , but it is gods doings Again he reports he is homesick for her and the children, wishes the war would end end soon, he would die before he would leave her side again. He finishes the letter with "I must close, farewell my love", and at the bottom he writes their names. John w W Hutchinson , Catherine C Hutchinson. Pages 4-8 are written in faint pencil after presumably spilling his ink bottle, and and very hard to read.. The 8 pp 8 x 5" Letter is fragile- the folds have archival acid free repairs, Overall Fair Condition. Comes w service info- John was released from parole camp in early 1863 and returned to service but died of fever at Beaufort, South Carolina a few months later is buried in Beaufort National Cemetery, South Carolina. His two other brothers also served- . Anson W.Hutchinson served 4 years with the 32nd NY Volunteers, Brother William joined the 2nd NY Heavy Artillery but was captured at the Battle of Cold Harbor in 1864 and died a Prisoner of War within a few monthsat Andersonville Prison, Georgia.John and Catey were poor, renting land to farm and Catey and children were . taken in by Johns parents. Catey never remarried and in 1925 was still alive and receiving a widows pension.
