The story follows Batman as he enters the asylum after the inmates, led by the Joker, take control of the building. The villains promise to release their hostages only if Batman agrees to spend the night inside with them. As Batman travels deeper into the maze-like building, he has to face his worst enemies—like Two-Face, Scarecrow, and Killer Croc. At the same time, the book tells a spooky parallel story about the man who built the asylum, Amadeus Arkham, and how he slowly lost his mind. In the end, it is a psychological story about whether Batman himself is truly sane.
