This miniature hardstone carving depicts a resting hare, its elongated body and gently curved back shaped from a single piece of agate whose natural coloration becomes an integral part of the sculpture. The animal is rendered in a compact, relaxed pose, with its forelegs drawn beneath the body, hindquarters tucked close, and a small tail completing the silhouette.
The agate displays a striking asymmetrical distribution of color. The face and left side of the body are pale and translucent, while rich honey and deep cognac tones define the right foreleg, left flank, and small tail. Subtle darker accents also appear toward the tips of the long ears. Rather than being treated as a uniform material, these natural variations are thoughtfully incorporated into the carving, giving the hare a distinctive sense of volume and character.
Much of the surface is smoothly polished, while restrained carving around the face introduces subtle texture. Incised details define the nose, while fine parallel grooves on the cheeks suggest the texture of fur. The underside is fully sculpted rather than flat, with the tucked limbs and lower contours of the body forming natural points of support.
The eyes are set with rose-cuts in discreet gilt mounts, providing small points of brilliance against the softly translucent agate. The combination of natural mineral patterning, polished surfaces, and selective carving allows the character of the stone to remain central to the composition.
