Matched pair of antique hotel china bread and butter plates from the St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana. Made by Bauscher Bros., New York, factory Weiden, Germany.
Each plate measures 6.5 inches across. The center transfer shows the hotel building with ST CHARLES NEW ORLEANS lettered alongside. Three additional architectural vignettes appear around the rim, along with the hotel crest and Louisiana agricultural motifs of cotton, sugarcane, and wheat.
The St. Charles was one of the first of the great American hotels, standing on St. Charles Avenue and hosting decades of Louisiana political life. Union General Benjamin Butler seized the building for his headquarters after New Orleans surrendered during the Civil War. The third incarnation of the hotel was demolished in 1974, which makes surviving service pieces the only physical record left of the place.
Backstamps: red script Bauscher Bros. New York, Factory Weiden, Germany, with 05. One plate also carries an impressed Bauscher Weiden roundel and an impressed 17.
Condition: excellent for age. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines, no repairs. Very little surface wear, with the transfers bright and complete on both plates. These were made as working restaurant ware and rarely survive this clean.
