This vintage belt buckle is a nostalgic piece of the early Alpine Slides. It was made as a promotional or operational souvenir related to the original Alpine Slide installations from the late 1970's in USA. Probably this was from the Park City, Utah installation in 1977 as that was the time when my husband acquired it.
The text on the buckle provides the historical context that determines its background: "Manufactured by ASCO of Manchester Center, Vermont" ASCO (Alpine Slide Corporation) was founded by Stig Albertsson, who brought the alpine slide concept to North America--most famously launching one at Bromley Mountain in Vermont on July 3, 1976.
"Developed by Demag of West Germany"--Demag (Deutsche Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft) was the heavy engineering firm in West Germany that developed the original tracking and sled mechanics for the slides.Demag originally developed the modern, wheeled--sled alpine slide system in Germany in 1972
Buckle is cast from a standard base metal (likely pewter or a zinc alloy) rather than a precious metal. This buckle has minimal wear and the lettering remains very legible. It works wonderfully on a 4 cm belt and gives a striking look to any fan of those fun loving, thrill seeking fans of the Alpine Slide. Great piece of Vintage Alpine Slide Memorabilia!
