Welcome to KeepsCache. Up for consideration is a large, completely natural sandstone concretion cluster collected from the High Ridge area of Jefferson County, Missouri. Weighing nearly 3 pounds and stretching 8 inches across, this specimen is a textbook example of localized sedimentary cementation.
The Formation
This piece features a coarse, granular sandstone matrix with several distinct, harder, darker rounded nodules protruding from the surface. These concretions formed deep underground millions of years ago when mineral-rich groundwater flowed through the porous sand. The minerals precipitated around a localized nucleus, cementing the sand grains together into hard, spherical masses.
Because these concretions are significantly harder and more densely cemented than the surrounding host rock, they resist natural weathering, leaving these striking, three-dimensional nodules exposed on the surface.
Display Features
This is a raw, unpolished, structural geology specimen. Its large size and highly textured, "lumpy" three-dimensional surface make it an excellent educational reference piece, a unique desk rock, or a great addition to a natural mineral landscape display.
