The rescue, conducted via lifeboat by theRepublic's crew, resulted in theGander Dealbeing abandoned, with all hands saved and brought to New York.
- The Rescue:Captain A.M. Moore of theRepublicsighted the distress signal of theGander Deal, which was not equipped with wireless, during a heavy gale.
- Rewards:Eight members of theRepublic's crew who manned the lifeboat, along with Capt. Moore and Chief Officer Harold L. Winslow, were later recognized for their bravery by the United States Lines.
- Context:The schooner was reported as heavily damaged by winter seas.
