ITEM DESCRIPTION
Original Italian illustrated weekly from the Belle Époque period, complete as pictured, featuring a dramatic full-color front cover titled “La rivolta in Albania” (the 1910 Albanian uprising against Ottoman forces), with artwork credited to L. Daimonte. The back cover presents a striking full-page rendering of the Zeppelin II disaster near Limburg—an iconic early-aviation episode that gripped Europe in spring 1910. Inside are timely articles on the IX Esposizione di Venezia (Venice Biennale 1910), the Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Bruxelles (Brussels World’s Fair), a survey of the new headquarters of the Ufficio Internazionale delle Repubbliche Americane (Pan American Union) in Washington, notes on the restoration of Florence’s medieval Palazzo Davanzati, a travel/science feature on the voyages of the Prince of Monaco, and a continuing series on “Il dominio dell’aria,” chronicling the rapid advances in aeroplanes and dirigibles. Period advertising frames the reportage, offering a vivid window onto Italian commercial design and culture in 1910.
The Albanian revolt of 1910—centered in the Ottoman Kosovo Vilayet—foreshadowed the turbulence that would culminate in Balkan independence movements and the re-drawing of borders before World War I. The Limburg airship catastrophe involved a German military Zeppelin torn from its moorings and wrecked by storms, emblematic of both the promise and peril of early rigid airships. Together, these subjects capture the era’s mix of imperial crisis and technological daring, in a handsome issue produced in Rome at the height of Italy’s illustrated press.
Good overall for 115-year-old newsprint: general age toning and light browning typical of the stock; soft handling creases; a faint old horizontal fold through the center from earlier storage; small corner wear and a few short, mostly closed edge tears at the fore-margins; minor soil/thumbnailing to the outer edges; spine fold with light wear but pages turn cleanly; no extensive losses noted. Presents well, with vivid cover inks and a clean back-cover image.
Make sure to see the photos above for complete details.
Paginated 290-303.
Measures approximately 15 1/2 inches tall by 11 1/4 inches wide.
